Neil Jenkins

I am an artist whose current practice is heavily engaged with electronic media and the networked communication. My interest in computers began in the 1980s, working with early home computers, learning to program in assembly language and creating a variety of software ranging from arcade games, music and graphic utilities to bespoke programming languages.

Over recent years, I have been commissioned by and worked extensively with a number of arts organisations and academic institutions, creating new work and providing advice, training and support for technology based arts organisations, projects and courses. Recent work included a research post in the Time Based Practice department of the Cardiff School of Art & Design (University of Wales Institute), investigating streaming media for performance and time based work on the Internet.

I worked with DA2 (Digital Arts Development Agency) throughout their three year programme, as web site designer, technical support and facilitator. I have collaborated with artists from many of the projects to create on line pieces based on gallery and performance based work; and assisted in the production of many internet, CD-ROM and video based projects.

In December 1999 I was commissioned as web artist in residence for South West Arts; developing their website for the Year of the Artist. Evolving throughout the year, the site allowed resident artists to contribute directly; creating pages and adding documentation of their work through a web based interface.

Whilst developing an experimental online studio of work (www.devoid.co.uk) I work extensively with ..here nor there.. using the internet, webcasting and networked technology as a focal point for (live) creative discourse, events and production.
